Learning from Leaders

Once a month Momentum, where I work, has a MoLeader's meeting where leaders and poteintial leaders of Mo get together.  Each month is a little different, but this month we broke into groups of three and read Exodus 18 and we asked two questions. (1) Where do we see good leadership, and (2) where do we see bad leadership? Here is what I learned from the text.

Good leaders...

Verse 8 - Celebrate wins! Moses shares what God has done for them.
Verse 12 - Throw parties! They give an offering and break bread. Aka - Festival/Party.
Verse 13 - Ask good questions! Jethro asks Moses good questions.
Verse 15 - Need structure! Moses overwhelmed without structure.
Verse 20 - Teach people! it's important to set the ground rules. Teach right and wrong.
Verse 21 - Don't do it all! Jethro tells Moses to delegate responsibility to others.
Verse 24 - Listen to wisdom! Moses talks to God often, but he has the humility to listens to Jethro.
Verse 25 - Choose wisely!  Moses chooses qualified people to leader underneath him.

What do you see in the text pertaining to leadership?  What would you add?

Live at Mo!

On 4.25.10 I got to preach at Momentum Christian Church. We were in the middle of a series called "Hard Knock Life" where we are looking at the life of Joseph, and talking about suffering.

My message was on Genesis 39 of Joseph and Potiphar's wife. The main point was "doing the right thing, even when you know you may suffer for it."

My Tagline: "How could I do such a thing and sin against God?"

Jonathan Acuff is hilarious.  Don't believe me?  Check out his blog or this video...


Stuff Christian Likes is a great mashup of humor, satir, sarcasm, and sobering realties of how Christians (and Non-Christians) think and act with a hard hitting curveball in the last chapter that caught me off guard.  Loved it!  I highly recommend this book to someone who has been 'churched'.  I think we are oblivious to the culture we swim in.  I also recommend this to people who are not a Christ follower.  It shows that we aren't oblivious to who we are and we can laugh at ourself.  Keep up the good work Jon!
