Are there any kind souls out there?

This is an IM conversation I had with a friend this morning...

8:24 AM
friend: When I got home last night, (Wednesday Night I get my son) I went to get him in Marion, and on the drive back home, he had a seizure on me....
me: ahh...
8:25 AM
how's he doing?
friend: Febrile seizure.....brought on by a spiking temperature....
He is fine.
and home.
I was at hospital until 10pm.
me: yuck
friend: Cat scan, blood work...whole nine yards.
8:26 AM first time anything health related has happened to him, besides common cold or strep....
Freaked me out.... I was driving on 309 [the route] and I look back and he's seizing.
8:27 AM Pulled over and jumped out of car... tried to flag someone down to help....and would you know...I've come to the conclusion, that people just don't want to be bothered with other peoples problems.
There wasn't a feakin kind soul
out that nite on 309, that's for sure.
me: man...
friend: I was yelling HELP HELP...bawling my eyes out.
me: man...
8:28 AM friend: trying to get someone to stop...
me: that sux...
friend: I had no clue what was happening to my son!
called 911and I'm glad I turned on the 911 locater GPS feature on my new phone when I got it last month
cause they knew exactly where I was.
The lady asked me where I was and I couldn't think.
8:29 AM couldn't remember the name of state route 309...
then she's like..."sir, it shows here your calling from 309...is that correct"
I'm like YES! that's it!...
looked at a mailbox and told her the address.
they sent a squad...
8:30 AM me: good to know that technology helps occasionally...
friend: you NEVER want to go through something like that, and never imagine.....uggggg.
but he's ok.... he has a fever this morning, but...
8:31 AM they said this is NORMAL. 1 out of 25 kids ages 5months to 5 years old will have a febrile seizure.
no treatment.....no side effects.....just brought on from a fever that has spike TOO quickly....
8:32 AM me: man...
I'm going to be a wreck when my kids go through things

This got me thinking...
Would I stop to help someone flagging me down on the side of the road?
Even if I do stop, will I offer more than my cell phone?

In short - No!
I find myself trying to justify my actions by saying, "I'm on my way to this..." or "I can't be late. I promised." But in those moments what I'm actually saying is, "I care more about myself, my pride, my reputation, than I care to see if this poor soul on the side of the road is looking for a 'kind soul' to reach out and help them.
I see people on the side of the road all the time, both physically and metaphorically, but do I stop. No!
I pray for my soul, as wicked as it is, that it becomes kind... aware of those in need. That I put my hands into action bearing their burdens as my own...
One day I may be on the side of the road with my child [Selah] in my arms pleading for help! Pray for a kind soul to join in and help bear my burdens.
Will you be a kind soul?

  1. I would hope that I would be kind and stop to help. However our culture tends to teach us to only look out for self--even in a safety aspect. What I mean is, since I am female, I would more likely stop to help a woman than a man, especially when it's dark and there's a man waving his arms trying to stop me. Our society is teaching us that this is a classic trap. But you can help by calling 911 from your phone and alerting authorities that someone needs help. But I wonder, would Jesus ever even consider the possible danger in helping someone no matter what the circumstances?

  2. What a tough question in a practical sense. Dude, I have no idea what I would do.

I know that I'm likely to stop, but it's hard to tell. Honestly, it depends on how benign the person in trouble looks...

This would've been a different conversation a couple of weeks ago. I watched 'Monster' the one with Charlise Theron starring. True story, disheartening, and pretty much makes you never want to pick up a person off the road again.

    Wretched man that I am...
